stories in colour

Detail - abstract painting from "textures of CHANGE" by Leda van der Post

My paintings usually begin with an idea, a question, or an experience I want to explore through colour and form. I work intuitively, allowing the process to unfold over time.

stories in colour extends that approach through connection. Instead of beginning only with my own ideas, a painting can begin with yours.

What if a painting could begin with your story? The starting point is not a fixed image, but a conversation about who you are, the space you live in, and what you would like the work to hold. Your story becomes the ground from which the painting develops.

This way of working remains firmly true to my visual language. The work that emerges is my response, shaped through colour, movement, layering, and often words worked into the surface. It may be abstract or figurative, or somewhere in between. The aim is not likeness. It is resonance: a painting that carries something of that story and becomes part of your life and space over time.

THE PROCESS

How it works

1. Conversation

We begin with a conversation, in person where possible, or online. We talk about your story and what feels significant right now, the space the painting will live in, and which colours, forms, or existing works of mine you’re drawn to.

You’re welcome to bring references if they help. Photographs, memories, and objects can all be part of this starting point. The aim is to build a shared understanding from which the painting can develop.

2. In the studio

From that conversation, I take the work into the studio. I won’t copy images or translate ideas literally. Instead, my response develops through colour, gesture, layering, and time.

The work may be abstract or figurative, depending on what emerges. It unfolds rather than being decided in advance.

As the painting develops, I share progress images so you can see how it is evolving. These moments offer space for reflection and conversation as the work continues to take shape.

3. Living with the work

When the painting is complete, it comes home with you. It is made to live within your space. Ideally, it will continue to reveal more over time, rather than delivering everything at once.
